Bullying is a hard fact of life. It attacks anyone. However, just as there are acts of hate, there are also acts of love. Know that you are loved, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, age, beliefs. This is what Spirit Day is about. To honor those driven to extremes due to bullying, and to remind those still suffering that there are people who care, people on your side. I know this well.

I was bullied in elementary school and as a result, was abandoned by my "friends." But a year later I met several people who let me into their circle. They were the best friends I could ask for, who cared not for what I had been accused of but who I was as a person. It is hard to ignore harsh words. But continue on. Soon kindness will reach you. Tell someone, ask for help, speak out. Don't be afraid to be yourself.

Purple Hearts are awarded to soldiers who have been wounded or killed in battle. This purple day is awarded to those victimized by the harsh battles of everyday life. Keep fighting, soldiers. Keep fighting. And someday the war will be won.
